The Red Cottage in Whitburn was built in 1842 by brick maker Thomas Barnes as a show house to display his specialty bricks. The house was designed by local architect Benjamin Green. Thomas Barnes, an industrialist who owned a quarry and brickworks, commissioned Green to create the ornate and unique home.
It is also claimed to be the house where the author Lewis Carroll once stayed. The daughter of the house is supposed to be the inspiration for Alice of 'Alice in Wonderland'
